Yorkshire Rover Club History

Yorkshire Rover Club (2006 – todate)

In 2005 all three regional branches of the national Rover clubs RP4DG, RP5c and P6ROC) were holding meetings etc. but attendance was sparse – we all recognised the benefits of a merger to form one club.  After some discussion it was agreed to form the Yorkshire Rover Club (YRC) from the 3 regional branches, starting in January 2006. The Yorkshire regional representatives from each of the respective national clubs to be part of the YRC committee.

Initially each of the clubs held their own funds, but these were merged in 2007.

Dave Perrins (RP4DG) and Richard Taylor (P6ROC) were joint chairmen, as Mervyn was happy to step back a little. Roger Rothery became Secretary & Neil Shuttleworth (RP5C) became Treasurer. Numbers wise there were 61 paid up members. These were approximately spilt P4 30, P5 20, P6 10, but there were perhaps more active members within the P5 & P6 ranks.

One highlight of 2007 was our June private evening visit to the Skopos Motor museum in Batley. August was our first YRC show Heath Common (Wakefield). The 3 clubs had previously helped to jointly organise this show in 2005 & 2006. The show held in glorious sunshine & was tagged “Classics on the Common”. It attracted around 200 entries, with a big turn out from members of the public, it also proved very profitable to the YRC thanks mainly to the ‘sponsor chasing’ of Roger Rothery. Neil Shuttleworth handed over the Treasurer duties to Laurie Arnold (RP4DG) on 01/01/07.

The YRC organised shows continued, moving to the Halifax Piece Hall in 2008 & 2009, and then to Oakwell Hall, Birstall near Batley from 2011 to the present day (although 2020 & 2021 were missed due to the Covid 19 pandemic). We also organised a classic car show at Roberts Park in Saltaire, as part of the Saltaire Festival from 2010 to 2014.

Joint chairman Richard Taylor sadly passed away from leukaemia in 2012, in his memory from 2013 the annual YRC Oakwell Hall show, is also known as the “Richard Taylor show”.

From 2012 Dave Perrins became chairman. The YRC committee has changed little over the years since being formed. The P6ROC banner was taken over from Richard by Trevor Denton until 2016, after which we had no P6 representative. Dave Perrins became the RSR region representative around 2015. The RP4DG banner being passed initially to Laurie Arnold, then in 2017 to Mel Cree. Laurie took the role again in 2018 before passing it to Dave Walton in 2019. The RP5C representative role was vacant when Mervyn left the YRC in 2015, Ken Pick taking up the committee role when he joined the YRC in 2017.

We moved our meetings from the Kirklands Hotel to Horbury WMC in 2016, after a change of Landlord at the Kirklands. Whilst attendance over the years at monthly meetings & some organised events have been modest (8 to 14), the number of paid up members has steadily increased reaching peaks of 72 in 2022.

Recent club level highlights were the organising of the RSR National rally at Newby Hall (near Ripon) led by Dave Perrins on 24/06/18. Then the organising of the RP5C National rally again at Newby Hall, led by Ken Pick in August 2019.

The YRC moved its monthly meetings from Horbury WMC (Wakefield) to Netherton Sports & Social club in May 2022.
